Saiko-ji Temple Kaidan-meguri (Underground Pilgrimage)
Like the famous 88-temple pilgrimage of Shikoku, Shodoshima has its own circuit of 88 sacred sites. Located close to Tonosho Port is Saiko-ji Temple—the 58th temple. In this program, participants descend a staircase from the main hall into an underground passage directly beneath the principal deity, where in complete darkness, they face the judgment of Enma, the king of the underworld. Anxiety gives way, and strangely turns into calmness by the time the judgment is over. Eyes closed, listening to Enma’s voice, slowly find yourself coming face to face with your own inner self. At the end, you can receive a special Enma goshuin stamp and commemorative gift.
