A Bath where the Heart Unwinds | shimayu
“Shodoshima Onsen Shio-no-Yu” is the first natural hot spring that emerged on Shodoshima.
A chloride spring echoing the island’s heritage of salt production,
it has been loved by local residents for generations.
Rich in sodium and magnesium, the waters condition the skin and warm the body to its core. Together with the löyly sauna and the cold plunge, the mind finds its release too.
A new gathering place where islanders and travelers meet.
space
Granite and Brown Tiles
The granite here was once part of the original hot spring, carrying the character of that history. Rather than replacing the material itself, custom-colored brown tiles were introduced around it—changing the styling of the surroundings while leaving the stone untouched—drawing out something new without losing the sense of the past.
A Line Between Finish and Structure
At 2,100mm above the floor, the finish changes with tiles below and exposed concrete above. The ceiling leaves beams and pipes deliberately uncovered, opening the space upward too. A single line running horizontally across the entire bathroom invites you to enjoy the space as you bathe.
Signage that Highlights the Architecture
Signs indicating “Onsen” and “Sauna” are positioned to straddle the line where the finish changes—their treatment shifting across the tiled and exposed concrete surfaces to visually complement the architecture. The letterforms were gathered from signage found at the facility that once occupied this site.
