Pick a Book for the Seaside

A bookshop beside Tonosho Junior High School, housed in a renovated 60-year-old home. School chimes and the voices of children drift softly through the walls. The owner, Naoki Tayama, moved here from Nagoya, drawn by the landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea. The selection centers on books about Shodoshima’s history and the land and its culture, ranging widely from novels and essays to picture books and zines. The seaside is just a short walk away—pick out a book and let the sea breeze turn the pages.

Meet the Island’s Sea Life

Miyanoshita Beach is a one-minute walk from the shop—a rare tidal flat for the island, wide and shallow. Locals come to walk or gather clams, but I like to sit by the water and relax. Fiddler crabs and shorebirds like plovers and ospreys live here, and there is always something to spot. By the way, the uninhabited island across the water shares the same characters as “Shodoshima” but is pronounced “Azukijima.”
