Edokutsu Goma-kito (Cave Fire Ritual)
Like the famous 88-temple pilgrimage of Shikoku, Shodoshima has its own circuit of 88 sacred sites. A distinctive feature of Shodoshima’s circuit is the number of “mountain sacred sites”—temples built into mountains and natural caves. Edokutsu, the 60th temple, is one of them: its principal deity is enshrined within a natural cave, and it is the sacred site on the island closest to the sea. In this program, write your wishes on goma-gi, a ritual wood, then offer it to the flames with sacred offerings in prayer for fulfillment of your wishes. At the end, receive a gold paper talisman, a goshuin stamp, an omamori charm, and Shodoshima hand-stretched somen noodles as sacred offerings.
